AMA 2010 Red Carpet

This is what showed up to the American Music Awards:

Miley Cyrus looked decent... I'm really not sure what she's wearing. It would have looked great without the huge bow/train on the back, but she looked okay.

Rihanna looks stunning in a sheer, floor-length red gown. It might seem like a little much matching her dress to her bright red hair, but I think she pulls it off.

Nicki Minaj and Phoebe Price both went for colorful, crazy prints, which I think works well for them.

Kelly Osbourne and Taylor Swift looked the best out of everyone. Kelly continued with her elegant, classic red carpet style in a laser-cut black dress. Taylor wore a a mini dress covered in metal and sequin embellishments. I love seeing her in something young and edgy. It's different for her, and it's fun. I also prefer her hair straight and sleek, like it is here. They both win my vote for best red carpet style at the AMAs.

And then there's Ke$ha:

Of course, I have to mention Ke$ha. She's really good at making herself look idiotic, but I suppose you have to do what you can for attention in that industry. She never wears anything flattering to her body, let alone something semi-attractive.

Sarah Burton's first collection as Creative Director of Alexander McQueen has been the most anticipated collection since McQueen's unfortunate death back in February. Filling McQueen's shoes is probably one of the most difficult things to do, but Burton was chosen, and I think she did really well. This collection feels like a tribute to some of McQueen's best seasons and pieces, while still new and exciting. Every piece is stunning, and I think Burton will continue to grow Alexander McQueen's legacy in the future.

Tsumori Chisato's continuing inspiration seems to be the circus. Everything is quirky, bright, colorful, and fun, just like her Fall 2010 collection. Wavy zig-zag stripes, illustrations of leopards and clown-ish girls, and jumpsuits make up a good part of the collection. My favorite thing in this collection is the trompe l'oeil prints: ruffles, ties, and bows appear to be painted onto the clothes. The quirkiness of the collection would make it right at home in London, but everything from the shapes and fabric choices, to the construction and overall heir of sophistication make it nothing less than pure Parisian elegance.

Just Cavalli's spring collection is filled with bright colors, large prints, victorian lace, metallic vests and jackets, ruffled white dresses, chunky stone necklaces, wide-brimmed hats, and lots of maxi dresses. Overall, the vibe was very hippie-gypsy, which seems to be the idea a lot of designers are going for for next spring. I love the care-free spirit of these floral prints and flowing dresses.

Mark Fast continued with his usual intricate, form-fitting knit dresses for Spring 2011, but he managed to make this collection new and different. There are the expected black mini dresses, but he added a lot of interesting elements: fringe that gives a bird-of-paradise vibe, Swarvoski crystals, and new colors that we wouldn't expect to see from him. His past couple of collections, while I didn't dislike them, were quite boring, because they were essentially the same. I was fully expecting more plain, knitted dresses this season, but he really surprised me. I just hope he can continue to make knit dresses new in his future collections.

Oh, Giles. Everything in this collection is so cute, and ridiculous, and unnecessary, and that's exactly why I love it. Sweaters with little googly-eyed creatures and hibiscus flowers, and neon-colored furry hats are just two of the quirky details in this colorful collection. Giles' designs really are the epitome of the London aesthetic, and he is certainly one of the front runners.

Marc Jacobs brings back 70's Glamour

Big frizzed-out hair, varying shades of red, purple, orange, and gold, square sunglasses, large hair and neck accessories, and long dresses with lots of movement all invoked true 70's glamour at Marc Jacobs. I was so happy to see this collection; I've been in a 70's vibe since last November, and have just been waiting for the disco-glamour of that era to be revisited by designers. (See my inspiration collage from last winter.) Sonia Rykiel had a little bit of that playful glamour in her Spring 2010 collection, but no one (recently) has given that era such a real and elegant--yet still modern--tribute until now. Marc never ceases to please, and I think this may be one of his best collections in recent seasons.

Casual American Classic: Ralph Lauren SS2011

The entire Ralph Lauren spring 2011 collection was beautiful. The whole vibe was sort of a western feel meets Classic American Bohemian. Lots of long white dresses and brown suede. Everything was gorgeous, but this look in particular really stood out to me (maybe because it was just about the only thing that wasn't white). I really love the idea of mixing this fancy, glittering sort of flapper-style skirt with something as casual and classic as a plaid button down. Very Ralph Lauren, very American.

Proenza Schouler SS2011

Proenza Schouler made a more feminine, more lady-like collection for Spring, but they kept their usual cool edge. My favorite dresses in the collection are made from sheer fabrics in black, white, and neon green. My favorite part of the whole collection is the details: hook and eye closures used as embellishments and lots of little ruffles. I would absolutely wear these dresses in a heartbeat. They're just beautifully done.

Rodarte SS2011

I was never really a Rodarte fan for some reason, but I think it's really starting to grow on me. The spring 2011 collection is absolutely stunning. I love how all of the fabrics, prints, and colors mimic the earth and nature. It shows how beautiful nature is, and how important it is to appreciate it and take care of it.

There are two things in particular about this collection that really pulled me in: The first thing being the gorgeous, blue and white china-like prints (china as in "My parents are coming for dinner, get out the good china"). The print--especially on the dress above--is so grand and fragile.

The second thing I really liked about this collection is the gold lips! Lip color has been a very prominent beauty trend on the runways so far this season and Rodarte has added to it. The metallic gold lips are ethereal, celestial, and romantic. They work so well with the collection. The lips actually look like gold leaf; very delicate. I would love to try out gold lips, but I'll probably just stick to gold shadows and maybe even try out some blushes.

A makeup tip most of us have probably heard at one point in our lives is to "never match your eyeshadow to your outfit." But no one ever said anything about matching your lipstick to your outfit. And that's just what they did at Alexandre Herchcovitch. Mint dresses with mint lips; black dresses with black lips; pale gold dresses with pale gold lips; everything matches! And it actually came out looking...good. While I doubt most of us will try this out in the spring, I think it could be really fun. I'm already looking forward to unconventional lip colors next spring, so why not try out some pastels to match my dress?

High School Jocks Inspire Collections for Spring 2011

Sporty and athletic aesthetics have been popular the past couple of seasons, but never very...cool. For the Spring 2011 season, two labels have managed to make "sporty" cool, casual, and super sexy. Forget shoulder pads and football-inspired wear; for spring, it's all about the high school basketball star.

Jonathan Simkhai took the preppy side of classic high school jocks and turned those ideas into a collection filled with a mix of feminine and slouchy-chic shapes, then added glamorous details to spice it up. Letterman sweaters, mens-style button downs, and striped tube socks give a "I'm wearing my boyfriend's clothes" vibe that shows a cool confidence.

Tom Scott made a whole collection directly inspired my classic basketball uniforms and gymwear, and even presented the collection in a school gym. But Scott went in a bit of a different direction than Simkhai; the girl Tom Scott envisioned isn't quite as feminine as the latter. Jumpsuits, hoods, baggy gym-style shorts, and cropped t-shirts are the highlights of the collection. This girl is a little tom-boyish and athletic, but still unbelievably sexy. She can hang with the boys, but still keep her feminine side intact.

The main difference between the "girls" represented by the two collections is this: the Simkhai girl is a girls' girl, and the Scott girl is a guys' girl. But in both collections, you'll find that sporty can be cool, young, and sexy.

The season 4 premiere of Gossip Girl was on last night. I am a Gossip Girl addict, and have been since it started. I read the whole book series before the TV show started, so I've loved GG for a good 7 years now. And to my surprise (not sure how I missed this news since it's apparently been around the internet for weeks), Karlie Kloss--one of my favorite models--made a little cameo! She looked unbelievably gorgeous and so elegant. It's hard to believe she's only 16 or 17. I just had to share these pics with you guys. Shoes at Peter Som SS2011

I had to make a post dedicated to the shoes at Peter Som. I did a review of the full collection, but these shoes just needed to be shown up close. The super-high, platform wedges are sweet and adorable but still have a little hint of sex appeal. The print is beautiful: think about dipping a paintbrush in a cup of water, and this is the effect you'll get. It's also a little bit marble-like. Basically, I just want these shoes!

I was planning on doing a whole post about all of my favorite looks from the white carpet at the MTV VMAs, but I really didn't like anyone's outfit...except for one. So this whole post is dedicated to Katy Perry because she looked absolutely, unbelievably amazing in this gorgeous Marchesa dress from the Fall 2010 collection. This is a really nice change from her usual super-tight, super-short, candy-colored get ups. It's elegant, but she keeps it fun with the pink and blue streaks in her hair. A++.

Charlotte Ronson went with a girly-grunge aesthetic for spring. The collection is made up of flowing maxi dresses, calico florals, plaids, knit beanies, and lots and lots of layers. What's great about these pieces is that none of them are too heavy, so you can layer up in early spring, and strip down to a single dress when the summer heat comes around. Ronson also added a few pieces to keep with the military trend--which is apparently not quite over yet--without making it too much of a focus in comparison to the other pieces. One thing that really makes this collection so appealing is the styling! The long-sleeved shirts tied around the models' waists is perfect; that was the only way to carry around a sweatshirt or jacket back in the day. Being a child of the 90's, it just really speaks to me. Charlotte Ronson always makes youthful, easy pieces and this collection is no different.

Bright colors, floral prints, bralettes, and hot shorts: they may not be "new and innovative" ideas for spring, but who cares! Peter Som made fun, adorable, wearable pieces for his spring collection and I love it! It's a little bit Barbie-girl, a little bit "California girl," and a little bit Miami Beach. It's definitely a collection for the younger set; for the sweet girl that loves to have fun. "Come on Barbie, Let's go party!" Can we just bring that song out of the vault and christen it as Summer 2011's theme song? I'm all for it. And I'll wear nothing but Peter Som (I wish).

Jen Kao: you continue to blow my mind. I've been paying close attention to this label since it started showing at NY fashion week, and I have loved every single collection. It's never really my style, but it's always beyond beautiful. This collection is beach-y with it's netted knits, light fabrics, and bright blue prints, but it's not for your typical beach girl. No, this collection is made for the tough girl. In the past couple of years, we've seen a lot of designers making clothes that have been labeled as "street warriors" or "urban warriors." Well, for spring, Jen Kao made clothes for the beach warrior. I must also mention the beads/chains and sand spread out all over the runway. It makes for a very ethereal beach scene. I watched the video from the show over on Milk Made (still up for viewing), and it was just beautiful. Check it out if you have time.

Fashion Shows Streaming Live!

A few designers decided to stream their runway shows live last season, so that fashion addicts all over the world could feel like they're sitting front row. That idea has really caught on. For the Spring 2011 shows, some of the top NYC designers will be streaming their collections live online. Exciting right?

I didn't check the list until a few hours ago, so I missed a couple, including Vena Cava and Jen Kao, but not to worry. The videos are still up on the Milk Made website.

I love the chic, rock n' roll vibe of this collection. It's a little torn apart, and yet still put together. Behind Willow is Australian designer Kit Willow. I've really gotten into Australian labels lately because they tend to have a really laid-back style behind all of their work. Perhaps it's that natural Australian cool that makes everything so lust-worthy. I'm glad to see an Australian designer showing at NY Fashion Week. I hope more Australian labels come to the good old USA.

Denim shirts have been a pretty big trend this summer (so has Double Denim, but please, leave that trend alone), and for good reason. What's more comfortable in summer heat than a loose, button-down? Plus, it's extremely versatile: wear it buttoned up with black fringed shorts, or leave it open like a jacket and wear it over a flowy white dress. But just because summer is almost over doesn't mean you can't keep wearing this basic piece. With it's all-American appeal, there will be numerous occasions in your life that call for a good ol' denim shirt. And the best thing about this trend? You can find an endless number of denim shirts in all shapes, sizes, and varieties at any thrift shop for about $3-5. But if you're not into thrifting, look above for a few great (new) denim shirts.

Betsey Johnson temporary tattoos seem like the best/most obvious idea ever (especially after Chanel came out with their temporary tattoos months ago), and I was excited when I heard that Betsey Johnson was making some...but then I saw them. I do like the snakes, but the rest are just trashy in my opinion. I know, temporary tattoos=trashy, big surprise. But Chanel's were really beautiful and fashion-forward; Betsey's look like those ugly tribal tattoos and remind me of "Mom"/heart tattoos that a big biker guy would get. I guess the roses are cute, but not really as a tattoo. But they're temporary, so I guess as long as they're fun, what does it matter?

I certainly won't be spending $25 on these. Will you?

Emmys 2010 Red Carpet

Lea Michele had one of my favorite dresses of the night. She looked stunning in this navy Oscar de la Renta gown.

And navy seemed to be popular. Julie Bowen and Jayma Mays also chose chic, navy dresses.

Dianna Agron wore a pink and black, lace Carolina Herrera gown. As much as I loved Lea's dress, Dianna's has to be my favorite. Screw white, I would get married in that dress.
January Jones wowed in a gorgeous blue. The long, feather-like train reminds me of a peacock, and that's an absolute YES in my book.

Kelly Osbourne and Heidi Klum both chose black, but their dresses couldn't be more different. Kelly looks like she came straight from Old Hollywood, while Heidi wore yet another mini. I'm not really a fan of short dresses at this type of award show, but Heidi's got the legs, so why not?

Maria Menounos dazzled in a Ralph & Russo gown, drenched in Swarvoski crystals. The back is my favorite part, and her red lips were the perfect match.

Kim Kardashian, always gorgeous, wore a Grecian-style, Marchesa gown. And Olivia Munn balanced a bright red Zac Posen dress with subdued hair and makeup.

This lookbook for New Zealand label Ruby is beyond adorable. They're going into their spring season down under, and I'm becoming more and more jealous. I wouldn't say the style on the red carpet at the Teen Choice Awards is the best, but these girls all looked pretty cute. I wasn't aware of Katerina Graham before looking up red carpet pictures earlier today (she's on Vampire Diaries), but I think she looks great. Her style is a little different, but I really like her dress! Selena Gomez looked gorgeous in a simple white dress and nude heels, and that green color actually looks nice on Emma Roberts.

Clogs were a WTF-kind-of-thing until the spring shows last fall. Now they're everywhere! With the clogs designers are coming up with these days, it's hard to imagine why we hated them so much before. I really like the Jeffrey Campbell's (obviously).

Lame, obvious exclamations aside, this collection really is beautiful.The pink pieces are my favorite: they're feminine, but the space prints give them some sort of edginess. And the final blue, star-studded number is just adorable. It's perfect for the girly science-nerd.

Chanel is always very hit or miss with me. I was quite fond of the recent resort collection, but this season's couture...definitely a miss. Most of it was actually just plain ugly. BLASPHEMY! I hear you cry. I know, I know, but, really, I just wasn't all that excited by it. I found four--count it four--looks from the couture collection that I can appreciate; or at least, I can appreciate the idea of these looks.

What do you think of this collection? Of Chanel in general? Am I crazy for calling anything Chanel does ugly?
